Antelope Draw Site (41LM118)

New LUAS Project – Antelope Draw Site (41LM118)

LUAS has begun excavating a new site located in a wooded draw on the western edge of the Lampasas Cut Plains. The site may have been occupied around the time when the region’s hunter-gatherers were switching from the atlatl and dart to the bow and arrow, as shown by the projectile points found in the site area, which include both the latest dart point forms and the earliest arrow point forms. The main purpose of the excavation will be to date more precisely and accurately this important event – thought to have occurred around 1300 years ago in the Central Texas region – by collecting biologically young carbonized plant material for radiocarbon-dating from a probable heath that was recently discovered at the site.
